The Mighty Mutt Recommended Reading List:

Puppy Primer-Dr. Patricia McConnell
This is an informative and practical guide to getting started on the “right paw”. Dr. McConnell has a lively writing style, making this a useful and fun read too. Covers housetraining, obedience, and manners.

Think Dog! “An Owner’s Guide to Canine Psychology”-John Fisher
The late John Fisher opens our eyes to the mind of dogs. Lots of good ideas to chew on.

The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog-Terry Ryan
Don’t let the name fool you, there are great ideas so “remodeling” isn’t necessary! Practical and insightful, the simple illustrations help clarify ideas for both adults and children.

Don’t Shoot the Dog!-Karen Pryor
A proponent and maverick in the use of operant conditioning/clicker training with family dogs, Karen Pryor has changed the way people train. The ideas in this book apply to all animals—people too.

Culture Clash-Jean Donaldson
First published in 1996, this book was the winner of the “Maxwell Award for Best Dog Training Book”. Straightforward, and many times humorous, explanations of the reality family dogs face in our modern society. Ideas and case studies sited to help you troubleshoot.

Body Posture & Emotions “Shifting Shapes, Shifting Minds”-Suzanne Clothier
“While it’s easy to focus on the dog’s behavior, the unpleasant truth is that the dog may be reacting quite honestly to our actions. If we are the source of the problem, then it behooves us to change our behavior before we attempt to assist the dog.” Suzanne Clothier offers insights into your dog’s body language and ways of altering and shaping with your own actions.

Clicker Fun “Dog Tricks & Games Using Positive Reinforcement”-Dr. Deb Jones
This is a great introduction to the use of the clicker and a bunch of fun games, activities, and tricks to teach your dog.

You can order these and other great books from Dogwise
